All
I seem to hear these days is the state of the economy. Some say nothing is happening. Others keep telling me how busy they
are. The truth, I think, is somewhere in
between. How is it in your neck of the
woods? What really tics me off is the
statement from so many that “You know, Tom, it won’t be like it was
before”. No kidding! Of course things will be different. It’s what is known as change. Have you heard of it? So many people fail to realize or acknowledge
that change happens every single day we are in business. Actually, it just happens every single
day. How you manage that change is the
real sign of a professional interior designer and competent administrator. Although I haven’t been around since the great
depression of 1929 I have lived through a few downturns in the economy. Without fail the time afterwards involved
change. Change in the way we do
business. Change in the way money and
income is distributed. Change in the way
we deal with our clients. Change in how
we fund our projects and how we work with vendors and mechanics. Change in the way we manage our cash flow and
change in the way we work as professionals.
The
other thing that happened after every single downturn was an upturn in
business. Extraordinary, isn’t it. But every singe time the economy was in the dump
it started working again. As I’ve said
before, now is the time to jump on the economy train before it is out of the
station completely. Every single
designer I talk to tells me they are getting more phone calls, seeing more
prospective clients and actually doing more work. We’ve seen it out here in
